Works by Stockhausen, and Friedrich Nietzsche will be performed by Holger Hiller (Palais Schaumburg) – Boards of Canada and Kraftwerk. Other artists involved include dancers Latisha Sparks, Zen Jefferson and Miriam Arnold, the re-united Hamburg new-wave band 1000 Robota, and of course the musicians of s t a r g a z e themselves who will perform their project based on Boards Of Canada’s album ‘Hi Scores’ which featured The Notwist’s Andi Haberl on drums.

The event consists of Strings, a piece by Kahrs for string quartet, and a lecture-performance, it’s about time, by d’Heudieres.
In Strings, a string quartet plays the opening page of Beethoven’s C minor op. 18 No. 4. In a dramatic progression, violins, viola and violoncello combine rising Fortissimo and quiet Staccati to a harmonic whole. This coordinated homogeneity comes to an end as the playing stops after the first melody and each musician swaps position and instrument with their neighbour to the right. With each other’s instruments, things become very different. The playing starts a balancing act between fragility and catastrophe. A tone leaps from the sequence, and seconds of silence occur between sharp and lucid dissonance. Clearly unsettled, the participants fight through the score until every player has sat in every chair.
d’Heudieres’ new lecture-performance it's about time uses La Monte Young's Composition 1960 #10 as a springboard for considering the infinities contained within music, time and space. In addition, d’Heudieres will present a new piece developed specially for FTHo.

Uwaschofar gadol jitaka, wekol dmama daka jischama. I heard Allen wrote a poem for his mother, Naomi. Naomi the mother of Ruth. The shofar blasts, one time, three times, nine times, one time, ninety times and then ten times, one hundred cries, as the cries of Sisera's mother. The new year is announced in the silences between. The rhythm the rhythm - and your memory in my head three years after.
Song for Naomi is part meditation on Allen Ginsberg's poem Kaddish, the Paperworks by Viola Bittl, the patterns of the shofar blasting during the Jewish new year, part invitation for a violinist to become a beast, the Kaddish and the shofar - and a dream, of a thread or voice so thin, the entire world was resting its sleep on it. Twigs on water and you are still here.

These Two Wars
Turner prize nominee Mark Titchner, festival curator André de Ridder and presenter Sara Mohr-Pietsch lead an unconventional evening combining discussion, performance and exhibition tour. Inspired by the legacy and socio-political ethos of the post-hardcore band Fugazi, the conversations that unfold will touch on themes of artistic independence, activism and the ownership of art. The evening will be interspersed with specially commissioned Instrument Solos based on material from Fugazi songs composed by Greg Saunier (of Deerhoof) amongst others.

The evening starts with experimental producer, musician and artist Matthew Herbert reading out exerpts from his latest record that was released in 2016 – as a book.
“Somewhere buried in the last 100 years between the invention of the microphone, the tape machine, the sampler and the computer, music has undergone a formidable and profound revolution. Instead of making music with specifically designed instruments, we can now make music out of anything (whether it is intrinsically musical or not). Why use a violin when you can use a lawnmower? Why use a lawnmower when you can use the explosion of a bomb in Libya?
I would like this book then to be a kind of manifesto for sound that makes this shift explicit.”s t a r g a z e ’ s Boards Of Canada project is based on their seminal High Scores ep which was recently re-released. The performance acknowledges the layered orchestrations of the originals, reimagining the colours stemming mostly from the band’s legendary arsenal of analogue synths by instrumental, semi-acoustic means.
This special performance at Musical Nova is a collaboration between stargaze and Finland’s most acclaimed jazz drummer, Teppo Mäkynen.
Stargaze will also perform a new piece by Qasim Naqvi.

Presented by The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music Series and The Current.
Throughout the 2015-16 season Liquid Music tracked the artistic collision of s t a r g a z e and Poliça, internationally renowned for their “dark conviction” (Pitchfork) and “beautifully melancholic” (The Guardian) sound.
Music for the Long Emergency, the uniting of electro-pop outfit Polica and chamber collective stargaze, is the stunning conclusion of over a year of intercontinental collaboration and musical innovation. Local electronic artist sloslylove is set to open.
The artists have been collaborating and composing brand new music during their year-long virtual residency. From sending demos back and forth, to going to each other's shows, to traveling to each ensemble's home country for writing, rehearsal, and recording sessions, the two groups have maintained a tight-knit and unique connection throughout the entire collaboration.
The music is inspired by The Long Emergency, a book by James Howard Kunstler exploring the potential long-term collapse of industrial society due to scarcity of oil and climate change. The name refers to the beauty of destruction. Organ Reframed - London Contemporary Orchestra
Organ Reframed is a three day festival of film, intimate solo sets, improvisations and larger scale commissions based around Union Chapel’s 1877 organ, designed and built for the space.
